Just my thoughts....
Needing Prayers and Thoughts
Published on April 22, 2014 By RedneckDude In Everything Else

Guys, I thought I'd break a pattern and write a post about me, for a change....heheh...

This Friday, I will be having an ablation.

For those who don't know, it's a simple procedure where the Dr. will do a heart catheterization through my groin, up a vein/artery, and into my heart. He will cauterize a line of spots on the inside of my atrium in an effort to correct my atrial flutter. If that doesn't work, I will be fitted with a pacemaker.

A month or so ago, I had a series of weak/dizzy spells. I had a blood pressure of 70/50 and a heart rate of 170. My wife, being a nurse, made me go to the emergency room.

At the local hospital, an effort was made to stop my heart to have it restart in rhythm. Adenosine was administered, wow, was that ever fun!  But it didn't work.

So, they sent me to another hospital where I was given a Cardizem drip which stabilized me. The next morning, they performed a cardioversion by shocking me to stop my heart and then have it start back in rhythm. That worked. I have been in rhythm ever since. (Imagine that, a redneck with rhythm....)

Been on Xarelto (blood thinner) ever since.

After Friday's ablation, I will remain on Xarelto for a while, and be on a heart monitor for a month.

Please send thoughts and prayers.

First off, I'm sorry you're going through this. I wish you all the best!

Second, I'm a paramedic and I know alllllll about Adenosine. It is NOT comfortable. Most patients describe it as a "horse kicking me in the chest".

Yikes.

Second, I'm surprised they gave it to you if they had already established that you had Atrial Flutter. Maybe they didn't know and the Adenosine helped them figure it out.

Either way, I'll be sending positive vibes your way.

The Adenosine was given before they decided I had Atrial Flutter. It was given at the first hospital. The second hospital made the diagnosis of AF.

Man, I winced just reading that first part. Good to hear the last procedure went well. Take care of yourself, Jim, and get better. Thoughts and prayers sent.
