Just my thoughts....
Why is this happening?
Published on February 12, 2011 By RedneckDude In WinCustomize 2011 Feedback

It seems lately, whenever I upload several skins, one will always go to moderation.

As a Journeyman, this shouldn't happen.

Why does this happen, and could someone please go push my Concept LCD Weather Gadget through? It shouldn't be there to begin with.

Please and thank you.

If I want docks, Giz, I want docks. But just because I want a set of meters, doesn't mean I want a calendar, a clock, and a media player to boot.

You are comparing apples to oranges, my friend...lol.

If I am not mistaken, I am allowed to upload 5 skins per gallery, per day.

But I uploaded 5 gadets at a time, and then 5 widgets 12-15 hours later.

Not angry face....annoyed face...

Due to the fiasco where we lost our weather feed from TWC a while back, I had to reupload my entire gallery. None of my weather widgets worked anymore. I was told to take them down.  This came not long after I had to reupload my entire gallery due to nick complications.

I will not package weather widgets with any other skins because I refuse to reup my gallery again. This isn't negotiable from my end. Weather widgets go seperately, or not at all.

As for the other widgets, I believe I have sufficiently explained my stance above.

Not at all Jim.

Meters + calendar + clock + media player = Widget...or in some cases a gadget. One fruit...maybe different colors...but still one fruit. Tabbed dock + Side dock + Tray dock + weather flyout = docks. One fruit...different colors...and still one fruit. If it talks like a widget and walks like a widget...hey!...it's a "widget".

Now...you say "if I want docks...I want docks"...well...alright then...what kind of dock? There is more than one kind of dock...I ought to know since I create them...but when they are created for a single theme or skin they get packaged together regardless. It has nothing to do with whether someone doesn't want the side dock and another doesn't want the tabbed dock...it's a "packaged deal" for one theme or skin. Then once they download them it's a simple matter of pick and choose and delete what they don't want. And the great thing is...everyone has a delete button!

If I used your way of thinking for this discussion I should be uploading everything separately since a side dock...although it is a dock the same as a tabbed dock...it behaves differently than a tabbed dock...it's just a dock of a different color or use...but maybe someone doesn't want the tabbed dock and shouldn't be forced to download it. Especially if someone is using the free version of OD which only allows the use of a side dock...and who wants something you can't use! Man! My download count would be huge!!! Hey...maybe your on to something here!?

A "widget" is a widget. A "gadget" is a gadget. A "dock" is a dock. Unless of course they are made for a different theme or skin...that is the only time they can really be considered different. Different theme or skin...different widget or gadget.

And no one is saying or suggesting you should re-upload anything...just from this point on...a widget is a widget...etc. etc. The one thing I can't dispute is that a widget is different from a gadget. So I can understand you wouldn't want to package a widget with a gadget...2 different galleries.

Every time I go to a gallery, for instance, objectdock or icons, and I see 30 icons that clearly belong to the same theme/package but are uploaded individually, I scream a little in my head.

[opinion] I also think to myself, this is a download count manipulation [/opinion]

If any of us dock makers were to do this, because not all people use all these items, we'd be called out and strung up.

Tile dock - separate upload

Zoom dock - separate upload

Tabbed dock - separate upload

Weather backdrop - separate upload

Separator - separate upload

Indicator - separate upload

Plus/Minus Image - separate upload

Overlay Image - separate upload

Doc and WebGizmos are correct.  If it's the same type of object, it should be packaged.  Period.  Any other method is just flirting around what's actually happening, download count manipulation.  Anyone who says or thinks otherwise if fooling themselves.

Well, hopefully that will be alleviated now that WC has created a docks only gallery.  Of course, older background that don't get moved are still in the other gallery, but it should be easier to find new ones now.

This will be my last statement in this thread. It is getting out of hand and isn't necessary.

Steve, before you throw stones remember that you uploaded the following which could/should have been bundled.

Rusty Rooster 4 subs.

Universe Metal 4 subs.

3 Cinnabars, 3 CopperDecks, 3 Darths....etc.    Just saying.

I am within the the upload rules/guidelines set by administration here at WC. Unless I missed something. If those rules change you all will have a gripe.

I will consider bundling my widgets/gadgets, when I deem it artistically feasible, in the future with one exception. I will not bundle weather widgets. If I am forced to bundle weather widgets, I will quit making them. Anyone who's been here a while knows why I say that.

I don't appreciate being hassled over something when I am within the rules. If there is a problem with something someone is doing, get the rules changed. I slept very little last night due to being all torn up over this thing. I do care, and I try to be a good community member. I see the point on the icons. Widgets aren't icons and I'm not uploading 60 seperate widgets. It's 5 widgets. You'd think I ripped something. I simply don't see making someone download a whole widget pack when all they want is meters, per se. It isn't about counts.

Look back through the gallery, widgets/gadgets have mostly always been uploaded seperately.

Skinning is supposed to be fun. This site is becoming less and less fun. I think this is why people are leaving. There is politics going on in the background, it's not hard to see, if you look.

I'm about to get tired of it all.

I love skinning, I find it fun, relaxing, and I will always do it.

I am done here. (this thread) If the powers that be feel the need, please contact me with your thoughts.

It doesn't take long for a question or discussion to get out of hand here now does it folks.

This being a community there will always be things that we can agree upon, unfortunately it seems we only agree on a few things.  I include myself in this by the way.    I have often in my zeal to try and help with a given question or problem opened my mouth before engaging the brain.  What I'm saying is that we will all have opinions as to how things should be or are expected to be done on the site.  How we convey those opinions really leaves lasting impressions.

I would suspect and expect if any one of us were violating rules of uploading to the site that the folks running the site would make contact with us so that we could correct it.  I also expect it to would not be in a forum thread.

I happen to agree with RedneckDude when the discussion is about DX Widgets and Gadgets.

I'm not sure anyone said he was violating any rules.  Folks are just pointing out that there may be some gentle manipulation going on.  Shall wallpaper artists start uploading separate resolutions for the same image.  I mean, I use 1920x1200, I don't need 1280x1024 or any other size.  No, they'd hear it from the community and most likely a mod would say it should be packaged.  What do I do with those extra wallpapers that I don't want/need...I DELETE THEM.  Simple really.

For the people that want all of the gadgets in his theme, they download each one and he gets separate download counts added to his overall numbers.  Gentle manipulation.  I do agree that gadgets and widgets are a different animal and should be separated.  But if there are 5 gadgets made for a theme, they should be packaged TOGETHER.  It is NO different than someone who makes 5 different wallpapers for a theme, or 5 different docks for a theme, etc.

Women screaming, children crying, fires raging out of control, panic everywhere, disease and pestilence. cats and dogs sleeping together: I see my work here is done.

Actually, I see no harm in discussing ideas. There's really nothing here to get all worked up over nor to lose sleep over. No one's attacking anyone else, and everyone's been polite. We can agree to disagree and do it politely, which everyone's doing... It's a milestone of sorts.

No one is violating upload guidelines, I believe doc's comment was more of a suggestion and a possible workaround to the current issues with the site.. We do not require widget's and gadgets to be packaged unless the uploading for a specific theme would be excessive. 5-6 stretched out over a couple of days or even 5 at once for one day is acceptable. Tho continuing for a few days on up would lend pause for concern...

Some like to upload as a set, others do not. Typically tho most themes get a total of maybe 3 widgets 3 gadgets etc, as the typical is clocks calendars and weather,so rarely do we see a flood of them unlike icons which have a huge amount of them per theme.

Thanks HG, and Thanks to Seth for trying to enlighten me. You know how hard headed a redneck can be.....

I will give you another way to look at this.

Stardock has a program called Theme Manager.  One of it's options is to build suites for a given theme.  When skins like wallpapers or docks are combined in an upload there is not a way to tell Theme Manager which wall resolution or which particular dock to download and apply.  If there is I haven't found it.

One little change in how skins are uploaded will have an effect on how other programs are able to access them.  Everything is interconnected, you may not see the impact if you don't use all the software and options in them but each can be impacted by one relatively small simple change.

Here's another way to look at it: The site is MS based so expect nutsy things to happen.

I say, "I blame Doc." Then all becomes placid, peaceful and even Mubarak gets back into power. Just say, "I blame Doc." You'll see how good it feels!

Go ahead...try. You'll see.
